I didn't have any idea how this would go since I've always bbq'd by sight. I've had overcooked steaks when I am shooting for rare or medium. I've been using these for a few weeks now and man, I'm sold.
First, I wanted to see about accuracy. I put both probes in hot water and they registered within half a degree from each other and from my reference (oral temperature) thermometer. Totally within tolerances and not different enough to be a problem cooking.
Inserting the probe into meat is simple enough. The pointy end makes it glide in without a problem, just make sure the probe is inserted all the way in to the designed depth. Then, put the meat in or on whatever cooking method you decided on.
On my first use on the BBQ, I was afraid that the plastic part might melt because I cook on high heat, but gave it a try anyway. I watched the temperature go up on the app and the holder. The information is instant. I cooked the steak like I usually do and found that there is absolutely no problem with the plastic part tolerating my cooking methods. I was also able to take my steak out one full minute earlier than planned because the internal temp had reached medium rare levels like I wanted. Totally prevented me from overcooking my steak. I was sold.
Since then, I've used it in roasts in the oven. This included using a Dutch oven. I was pleasantly surprised that the signal worked even in the metal pot. The oven is no problem, and the BBQ less so. I also find it great that I can be out of the house and still see the temp in my app since it sends the info via internet. You can set target temperatures on each probe, and it alerts you when you are getting close and when you get to your target. This is not absolutely necessary since you can use the base to see the temperature, tho you are limited to Bluetooth distances. I have not had any issues with battery life. Probe automatically recharges when placed back in the base. Base has the USB C type connection, and seems to last days and days on a full charge. Even after a couple of weeks of use, I have not had to recharge the base. Additionally, the base has magnets, so you can place it on a metal surface and have it stay there! I put it on the doors to my bbq (cool surface) and have line of sight from where I sit.
Would I get this again? Absolutely. I am not afraid of over or undercooked meats anymore.
